The aim of this invitro study was to evaluate the shear bond strengths of a total etch ( Solid Bond ; Kulzer ) and a self etching primer (Clearfil SE Bond ; Kuraray ) to air- abraded and bur-abraded enamel surfaces.120 extracted lower incisor teeth were used. Teeth were divided into three groups including 40 teeth each. In group 1; teeth were used as control, in group 2; outer enamel surfaces were air abraded, in group 3; outer enamel surfaces were abraded mechanically with a diamond fissure bur. 2.5 mm diameter cylinder composite resin blocks (Clearfil APX, Kuraray ) were bonded to the buccal abraded enamel surfaces with two bonding systems (20 specimens in each group). After storing in distilled water at room temperature for one week, bond strengths to enamel surfaces were measured at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. The data were analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan Tests.
The results were as follows:

Bond strengths values of SB were significantly higher than bond strengths of SE Bond for all types of enamel. Shear bond strength values obtained with SB( total etch system) to three types of enamel surfaces( air-abraded, bur-abraded, control) were close to each other. Shear bond strengths obtained with SE Bond (self etching system) to air-abraded and bur-abraded enamel surfaces were higher than bond strengths to control enamel surfaces.
From this study it is concluded that, with self etching systems, it is advisable to prepare enamel surface with bur or air abrasion. But it is not necessary for total etch systems.
