The public discussion of alleged adverse side effects of dental amalgam influenced treatment regimens in general dentistry and may have led to an increased use of tooth-colored posterior restorations. The aim of this study was to investigate wether there were changes in the types of restorations during the nineties. Therefore, 265 (1992), 275 (1996) and 362 (1999) male army recruits with a mean age of 20.9±1.7, 20.4±1.8 and 20.8±1.6 years were clinically examined by three calibrated dentists under standardized conditions. The examination included the assessment of type and localisation of the restoration. Differences in the type of materials used for restorations in 1992, 1996 and 1999 could be found. The total number and type of the observed restorations were found as followed:

Type of restoration 1992 1996 1999
  n >(%) n >(%) n (%)
Amalgam 1909 (80.1) 1470 (74.5) 1701 (70.8)
Composite 338 (14.2) 420 (21.2) 582 (24.2)
Cast restorations 20 (0.8) 25 (1.3) 29 (1.2)
Crowns 102 (4.3) 40 (3.3) 36 (1.5)
Temporary restorations 15 (0.6) 19 (1.0) 54 (2.3)

The number of amalgam and tooth–colored restorations in posterior teeth (Class I, II, V) were:

  Amalgam (%) Tooth-colored (%)
  1992 1996 1999 1992 1996 1999
Class I and II 91.9 74.0 71.8 2.6 11.8 19.5
Composite 95.3 81.4 47.8 3.3 15.0 38.5

The results show a decrease of restorations with amalgam and crowns, an increase of cast restorations and a marked increase of tooth–colored restorations in molars and premolars.
