Ariston pHc , suggested as an esthetic alternative to silver amalgam, initiates a new group of materials. It releases three kinds of ions: OH, Ca and F when pH in oral cavity decreases. The material is designed for reconstruction of tooth tissue loss in the both class I and class II cavities according to Black.
One hundred and two patients between 25 and 40 years of age were selected for clinical project. A total of 125 Ariston fillings were placed in either class I or class II cavities. Conventional cavity preparation was performed. Ariston material was applied in accordance with manufacturer`s instructions. Restorations were clinicaly evaluated and rated from 0 to 3 using Ryge`s criteria at the baseline, 3, 12 and 24 months. The fillings were examined for surface texture, anatomic form, marginal adaptation, postoperative sensitivity and secondary caries. The restorations with rating 0 and 1 were classified as acceptable fillings.
At the baseline, all of 125 restorations examined were rated 0 with respect to the all analyzed criteria. No postoperative sensitivity was observed.
At 3 month recall, 117 restorations were available for reevaluation. In the 26 cases the material excess at the filling edge was revealed ( note 1 ). Sensitivity of the restored tooth was reported by two patients and Ariston material was replaced by Ketac Molar. One hundred and fifteen examined restorations were clinically acceptable.
After 12 month observation 106 Ariston fillings were evaluated. Four cases of discoloration along the edge of restorations ( rating 1 ) and 2 cases of partial material fracture ( rating 3) were observed.
In the last clinical trial , after 24 months, 60 Ariston fillings were reevaluated. Smoothness of all examined restoration surfaces was noticed (rating0). Four cases of discoloration along the edge of filling (note 1), 6 cases of marginal gaps (note 3) and 3 cases of partial restoration fracture (rating 3) was observed. Pulpal inflammation was noticed in 1 case.
The results of our 2 year clinical evaluation indicate that restorations with Ariston material give satisfactory result as a restorative material in the lateral teeth.
