The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a dentifrice and a mouthrinse, which contained NaF and 0.03% Triclosan and were used before a cariogenic challenge with 10% sucrose solution, on the pH of human dental plaque. Water rinse was served as control. Ten adult volunteers were included to this study. Resting plaque pH values were measured in mesiobuccal plaque of upper canines and first premolars after two days restriction of daily oral hygiene. After rinsing with water for 2 minutes the plaque pH values were immediately obtained as control. And then volunteers rinsed their mouth with sucrose solution for 2 minutes. The pH changes measured at 5, 15, 25, 35, 50, 65. minutes after rinsing. With 1 week intervals, same procedures were applied to volunteers with dentifrice or mouthrinse.

The results were analyzed using Friedman ANOVA and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Tests and showed on the Table.

Groups connected by a bar are not significantly different.
(** p<0.01, * p<0.05)

The results showed that dentifrice and mouthrinse pH groups values were higher than control group and never dropped under critical pH (pH 5,5). But the differences were statistically significant only at 5. and 15. minute periods (p< 0.05). There was no significant difference between dentifrice and mouthrinse groups.

To conclude, the study demonstrated that use of NaF and triclosan (0,03%) based dentifrice or mouthrinse before a cariogenic challenge would not reduce the acidity of plaque by up to under critical pH (pH 5.5).
